A serious social problem, its repercussions should not be underestimated. The Effects of Colorism on Relationships Colorism is a particularly divisive form of bias. In the face of racism, people of color can usually turn to the support of their communities, but that’s not necessarily the case with colorism, where members of a person’s own racial group may reject or resent them due to the skin color biases rooted in the West’s history of white supremacy. Colorism in the African-American community led to light-skinned blacks treating their darker counterparts in the same discriminatory fashion as whites have treated people of color generally. Dark-skinned blacks could be denied the chance to join certain civic groups, clubs, and sororities in their schools and neighborhoods. Contrasting Images in Things Fall Apart and Heart of Darkness  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚   Joseph Conrad’s novel Heart of Darkness portrays an image of Africa that is dark and inhuman.   Not only does he describe the actual, physical continent of Africa as â€Å"so hopeless and so dark, so impenetrable to human thought, so pitiless to human weakness† (Conrad 94), as though the continent could neither breed nor support any true human life, but he also manages to depict Africans as though they are not worthy of the respect commonly due to the white man.   At one point the main character, Marlow, describes one of the paths he follows: â€Å"Can’t say I saw any road or any upkeep, unless the body of a middle-aged negro, with a bullet-hole in the forehead, upon which I absolutely stumbled three miles farther on, may be considered as a permanent improvement† (48).   Conrad’s description of Africa and Africans served to misinform the Western world, and went uncontested for many years.    In 1958 Chinua Achebe published his first and most widely acclaimed novel, Things Fall Apart.   This work—commonly acknowledged as the single most well known African novel in the world—depicts an image of Africa that humanizes both the continent and the people.   Achebe once said, â€Å"Reading Heart of Darkness . . . Unprepared to pay the high cost of health care, baby boomers are entering a Medicare and Medicaid system that currently serves 100 million Americans. 2015 to 2023, the cost of health care is anticipated to rise by 6%, that is 2% more than the past five years. Health care is not expected to inflate as it did in the 1980’s and 1990’s. The prediction for health care spending in the US this year is beyond $3 trillion. (Alonso-Zaldivar, 2014) Obama Care is considered liable for the 2% inflated health care cost. Due to the health care mandate, nine million signed up for health care this year and it is projected another eight million will seek health care in 2015. â€Å"Medicare and Medicaid will drive costs from 2016-2023, with average annual increases  of 7.3 percent and 6.8 percent respectively. For Medicare, it’s partly due to the retirement of the baby-boom generation, while Medicaid will see higher use of services by elderly and disabled beneficiaries†. As I sit in the airport, my eyes scan the scene. I begin to watch people as they walk past me. Some are in a hurry; some could care less if they make it to their gate on time. You begin to categorize different types of people as they walk, or run, past you. As I learn that my flight has been delayed for another three hours, I take a seat against the wall and start to make a list, a list of the different types of people in the airport. â€Å"What do you think we will do when we get to the hotel†, said my mom. Being caught off guard, I say, â€Å"Hmm?† â€Å"I said, what do you think we will do once we get to the hotel?† â€Å"I don’t know!
